TESTO is a tense, inventive series by Kida Khodr Ramadan and Olivia Retzer. Its experimental approach tells a bank-robbery story across seven short episodes. Five criminals, six hostages, a bank and the police outside form a contained setting that gives the actors room to improvise and keeps events moving quickly.

Strong characters in a confined space

The action is dynamic and intense, driven by strong characters. Ramadan, Frederick Lau, Stipe Erceg, Veysel and Mortel play the bank robbers. Nicolette Krebitz, Jeanette Hain, Ruby O. Fee and Katharina Thalbach bring an impressive counterweight to the macho atmosphere.

Closeness through long takes

TESTO’s storytelling and visual approach give it a distinctive sense of closeness and immediacy. Ramadan and Retzer use long takes and close collaboration between cast and crew to produce a lively, direct style. The sense of pressure is part of its appeal.

Verdict

The result is an intense, gripping experience that draws viewers into its characters’ world. TESTO succeeds through its story, its inventive use of the television format and the commitment of its performers.
