My Melody & Kuromi: Soft Textures, Surprisingly Strong Characters

The stop-motion rivalry combines lovingly made images with gentle humour and an unexpectedly appealing emotional centre.

MY MELODY & KUROMI Series Review (2025)

My Melody & Kuromi works remarkably well if you are open to a generous helping of fluff, sweetness and confectionery drama. Two rivals in Mariland compete through pride and baking. The premise is simple enough for younger viewers, but the stop-motion production gives it a charm that reaches beyond its small target audience.

My Melody's successful cake shop contrasts with Kuromi's struggling business. Jealousy and sabotage put their rivalry in motion, while a baking competition and a larger threat to the village expand the story. These conflicts fit together within a clear, accessible format rather than becoming unnecessarily complicated.

The animation is a delight. Soft textures make the world feel almost touchable, and the care in movement, expressions and small details gives even ordinary scenes their own appeal. The sets radiate warmth without looking cheap. This visual style supplies much of the show's welcoming atmosphere.

The characters offer more than a straightforward good-versus-bad contrast. My Melody is kind, organised and perhaps a little too perfect. Kuromi's noisy defiance is more immediately interesting, and the vulnerable moments gradually make her behaviour understandable. Their movement towards one another is predictable, but it feels earned.

The running jokes mostly work, and the episodes have enough energy to keep children engaged while allowing quieter emotional moments. Kuromi's stillness can be particularly effective. The music suits the tone, and the series generally gets to its point without an extended introduction.

The short format also limits the depth. Interesting conflicts sometimes finish just as they become more substantial, and some supporting figures remain thin. Still, I give the series 9 out of 10 points. Its imagery, tone and charm won me over. This is affectionate animated comfort viewing with more emotional care than its sugary appearance might suggest.
