Stefano Mordini's six-part Italian drama Adoration adapts Alice Urciuolo's novel. The disappearance of sixteen-year-old Elena unsettles a small community south of Rome, exposing more than the question of where she has gone.
Her absence brings hidden desires, secrets and relationships within her family and circle of friends into view. Love and longing run through the story, alongside the narrow boundary between devotion and obsession. The young characters must negotiate growing up while also facing the loss of a friend.
The characters feel layered and authentic. Alice Lupparelli plays Elena, whose absence remains a presence throughout the story. Noemi Megagnini gives Vanessa internal conflicts of her own, while Beatrice Puccilli and Giulio Brizzi add further complexity to the family ties and youthful relationships around her.
Mordini's direction is both sensitive and involving. Light, shadow and the locations in Latina and Sabaudia capture the summer heat and the tension beneath it. The camera makes room for broad landscapes while also conveying the claustrophobia of relationships in which too much remains unsaid.
The young cast convincingly expresses uncertainty, fear and passion. Their chemistry is particularly valuable: it gives the group's complicated connections and unspoken tensions credibility.
Adoration is more than a drama about a missing girl. It examines relationships and the often invisible lines separating love from obsession. Its psychological dimension stays with the viewer after the credits, making it a clear recommendation for those who appreciate thoughtful coming-of-age stories.
