1992: A Dark Past Behind the Expo's Bright Mascot

A strong central pair and Álex de la Iglesia's atmosphere sustain the thriller, despite familiar turns and uneven character depth.

1992 brings a murder investigation into contact with the legacy of Seville's Expo. Álex de la Iglesia combines two periods in a dark thriller whose strongest elements are its atmosphere and central performances.

Amparo searches for answers after her husband dies in an explosion. Former police officer Richi helps her, while struggling with his own problems. A series of murders and the repeated appearance of the Curro mascot draw them toward events linked to the Expo.

Marian Álvarez gives Amparo a convincing mixture of grief and determination. Fernando Valdivielso makes Richi's inner conflict tangible, and their chemistry helps sustain the investigation. The characters' pressures matter alongside the mystery.

The images connect contrasting versions of Seville. Flashbacks give the earlier period a distinct presence, while the mascot's use turns an innocent symbol into an unsettling motif. De la Iglesia maintains tension across the six episodes and stages the murders intensely.

Some strands are predictable, and certain characters would benefit from more development. For me, those weaknesses do not outweigh the series' appeal. It provides compelling thriller entertainment through the connection between past and present, with performances that prevent the investigation from becoming only a sequence of clues.
