Robot Dreams turns an unusual friendship into a warm animated adventure. Pablo Berger adapts Sara Varon's graphic novel through a lonely dog in 1980s Manhattan who buys a robot companion. Their connection brings happiness alongside unexpected difficulties.
The clear lines and flat colours provide an immediately appealing visual identity. José Luis Agreda's art direction gives the city and its inhabitants a distinctive shape. The simplicity of the design leaves space for emotional detail rather than making the world feel empty.
Small movements are particularly effective. Expressions, gestures and glances communicate feelings without dialogue, demonstrating how much animation can convey through careful observation. The characters' eyes often carry what another film would explain in words.
Alfonso de Vilallonga's music moves between gentle piano and lively jazz. Together with the sound design, it gives the friendship an emotional rhythm and connects the story to its urban setting. The technical work supports the feelings rather than competing with them.
The plot is sometimes predictable. Some elements could go further in exploring friendship and loss, and the narrative does not always match the nuance of the images. Those limitations remain relatively small beside the strengths of the presentation.
Robot Dreams is a moving, warm experience for younger and adult viewers. Its beauty comes from the connection between expressive animation, music and a recognisable emotional concern. Berger's original approach makes the friendship worth following even where the story takes familiar turns.
