Nimród Antal's Retribution is a gripping experience for thriller and action fans. Written by Chris Salmanpour, it creates an intense story that keeps the viewer involved and takes them through an emotional ordeal.

Neeson and the ensemble

Liam Neeson plays Matt Turner, a father and financier whose life is suddenly turned upside down. He brings raw intensity and desperation to the role, making Turner's struggle compelling from beginning to end. Noma Dumezweni, Lilly Aspell, Jack Champion, Embeth Davidtz and Matthew Modine contribute convincing performances to the tense atmosphere.

A threat inside the car

Set in Berlin, the story traps Turner in his car after an anonymous caller warns that a bomb will explode if he gets out. The action develops rapidly, with turns that maintain suspense. The confined interior becomes a source of claustrophobic tension, reinforced by the film's controlled staging.

Tight framing and sound

The technical execution, particularly the cinematography and visual effects, is impressive. Scenes are carefully constructed to heighten the pressure. Tight shots of Neeson's face capture the immediacy of his emotions and make each moment of the struggle felt. The sound design strengthens the tension and helps create an immersive experience.

Craft within familiar territory

Even within a familiar kind of role, Neeson remains convincing. Whatever predictability the story may have, there is care in its individual shots and cuts. Its production rewards attention to the details of how this confined thriller is assembled.

Family, betrayal and justice

The film is both a showcase for Neeson and an affectionate contribution to the action-thriller genre. Family ties, betrayal and a desperate search for justice provide enough substance to go beyond the most familiar clichés. Retribution covers recognisable territory but contains sufficient fresh elements to stand as a work of its own.

Verdict

Retribution is a solid genre entry, strengthened by Neeson's performance and Antal's direction. For viewers who enjoy Neeson and tense action thrillers, this is an engaging, nerve-racking film worth considering.
