Perlimps: A Beautiful World With a Demanding Story

Alê Abreu's expressive colors and central friendship are compelling, while the allegory may be difficult for younger viewers.

Perlimps creates a vividly colored world for a story that is more demanding than its appearance as a children's adventure suggests. Alê Abreu combines fantasy with questions about harmony, nature and the loss of innocence.

Fox Claé and bear Bruô come from opposing kingdoms. They must work together to find mysterious beings that may help protect the threatened forest. Their developing connection is the emotional center beneath the allegorical material.

The images are exceptional. Shifts in color and light make the world feel magical, combining a painted quality with digital animation. Each scene offers detail and symbolism, creating a visual appeal that recalls the richness of Tomm Moore's work.

The storytelling is less accessible. Younger viewers may find the themes difficult to follow, and several elements remain uncertain without a willingness to engage with the allegory. The balance between a child-friendly adventure and a serious subject does not always work.

For me, the characters and imaginative surroundings still provide enough feeling to make the journey compelling. Their movement from mistrust toward friendship supports the wider ideas. Perlimps is a distinctive, thought-provoking animated film, rewarding viewers willing to look beyond straightforward entertainment, while placing greater demands on its audience than the colorful surface first suggests.
