Paddington in Peru takes the bear away from London without abandoning the warmth of his earlier adventures. Dougal Wilson finds a new setting for the familiar emphasis on family, friendship and kindness.
Paddington travels with the Browns to visit Aunt Lucy. Her disappearance sends them on a search through jungle and mountains, guided by a mysterious map and encounters with some difficult-to-read strangers. The adventure is also a journey toward his roots and his understanding of home.
Ben Whishaw gives Paddington warmth and sensitivity. Hugh Bonneville and Emily Mortimer make the Browns caring but willing to join the adventure. Olivia Colman combines mystery with humor, while Antonio Banderas adds a charismatic sense of danger. The ensemble's chemistry remains natural.
The images give the film an expansive feeling. Landscapes, sets and costumes help build an inviting world, while the humor prevents its messages about belonging from turning preachy.
There are limitations. I miss some of the distinctive charm of London, and several developments are predictable. The new characters could also have more depth. Those weaknesses do not outweigh the film's appeal.
For me, this is a heartwarming continuation that preserves the bear's defining outlook. Its openness and kindness make it welcoming to newcomers as well as an enjoyable return for existing fans.
