Late Shift: Care Under Impossible Pressure

Leonie Benesch makes an understaffed hospital shift painfully immediate in Petra Volpe's powerful nursing drama.

Late Shift follows nurse Floria through an understaffed hospital shift that becomes a relentless race against time. Petra Volpe makes the drama both upsetting and angering, because its pressure feels so close to ordinary working conditions rather than an invented catastrophe.

Leonie Benesch gives Floria competence, commitment and visible exhaustion. She is trying to do her job properly while the conditions make that increasingly difficult. The performance finds its strongest moments in small efforts to breathe, recover and keep going.

The camera stays close, making the physical and emotional strain immediate. Tasks accumulate, colleagues are stretched and patients need more time than anyone can offer. Care and warmth remain present, which makes their cost more painful to see.

The supporting performances add to that pressure without reducing the ward to scenery. Experienced colleagues and an overwhelmed beginner show different ways of struggling within the same limitations. Patients bring individual needs into a situation already at capacity.

For me, the film is also a statement about a system asking people to compensate for its shortcomings through personal sacrifice. Admiration for the nurse is not enough if the circumstances remain unchanged.

Benesch's outstanding work and the intensity of the direction make this a powerful drama. It leaves sadness and anger behind, alongside a clearer sense of the people doing the work. Floria's strength matters, but the film is most affecting when it shows how much that strength is being demanded.
