Cliffhanger (1993): review

Cliffhanger (1993), directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone, combines action and adventure with a setting that is both majestic and lethal: the heights of the Rocky Mountains.

After a criminal operation goes wrong, suitcases of money are lost in the mountains. Gabe Walker, an experienced mountain rescuer still traumatized by a fatal accident, becomes involved in what appears to be a rescue mission. Instead, he encounters criminals led by the cold, charismatic Eric Qualen, played by John Lithgow. A ruthless pursuit follows, with Gabe fighting both the gang and the environment.

Stallone gives the character's emotional conflict a convincing presence. He works in the quieter moments as well as the action, and Gabe's effort to recover from guilt adds weight to the physical ordeal. Lithgow makes an effective adversary, even if his accent occasionally sounds forced.

Harlin's direction is dynamic and efficient. The climbing sequences are spectacular, and the mountain photography communicates height, exposure and danger. The landscapes are never merely decorative. They intensify the suspense by making every movement feel consequential.

The film also has clear weaknesses. Much of the plot is predictable and follows familiar action formulas. Some dialogue exists simply to move events forward rather than reveal character. Even so, the force of the staging and the intensity of the action keep it entertaining.

Cliffhanger remains a fast, suspenseful action film built around impressive stunts and a strong Stallone performance. Its landscapes and sustained atmosphere of danger give familiar genre mechanics a particularly effective setting.
