Captain America: Brave New World (2025): review

Mackie and Ford offer promise, but thin characters and uneven pacing weaken the Marvel film.

Captain America: Brave New World 🛡️ Kann Sam Wilson das MCU tragen?

Under Julius Onah's direction, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson fully steps into Steve Rogers's shoes following The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Captain America: Brave New World aims to combine a political thriller with traditional superhero action, but it never makes that balancing act convincing.

A White House conspiracy

President Thaddeus Ross invites the new Captain America to the White House, where it quickly becomes clear that larger forces are operating behind the scenes. A government conspiracy threatens to throw the international order into chaos. Adamantium, a rare metal revealed by a mysterious event, attracts competing interests. As Sam searches for the truth, he encounters powerful enemies, including the leader of the Serpent Society and the enigmatic Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson.

Mackie and Ford

Mackie gives a solid performance, but Sam's character development remains superficial. The internal conflicts of a hero burdened by his new role are suggested rather than explored. He is hurried from scene to scene without the space to shine as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford gives President Ross a certain authority, but the character remains thin and adds little emotional depth.

Action and effects (spoilers)

The action is staged on the elaborate scale expected from Marvel. Yet an overload of CGI sometimes makes it look artificial. The Washington, DC showdown between Sam Wilson and Red Hulk would have had considerably more impact with better effects. The fights are dynamic, but lack the creative identity that distinguished earlier Captain America films.

An uneven pace

The biggest problem is the uneven pace. Some passages feel rushed, while others drag unnecessarily. Attempts to connect political intrigue with superhero action often remain superficial.

Verdict

Captain America: Brave New World leaves a mixed impression. Its basic idea is interesting, but the execution falls short. Despite promising elements and some strong moments, it lacks the emotional depth and narrative finesse of a truly outstanding Marvel film.
