A retrospective of my ten selected original films of the year, with three additional mentions. This reflects the programme considered then and makes no current availability promise.

Officer Black Belt

The martial-arts sequences connect pace with violence and justice. Kim Woo-bin has physical presence and gives the character emotional definition. The balance between humour and seriousness is uneven. It nevertheless remains an engaging action film with a social dimension for me.

Sector 36

Deepak Dobriyal’s policeman contributes to an oppressive examination of corruption and social structures. The dense atmosphere softens little. That harshness makes the film difficult but forceful. Its camera draws me into a world where crimes cannot be considered in isolation.

Das geheime Leben der Orang-Utans / Secret Lives of Orangutans

The nature footage and David Attenborough’s narration bring the animals and their vulnerability close. Eden provides an emotional connection to the documentary. For me, it joins visual beauty with serious concern for protecting these living creatures.

Die Schneeschwester / The Snow Sister

The winter fairy tale addresses grief and hope for a renewed connection with life. Julian and Hedvig give its magical surroundings personal meaning. I enjoy the mixture of melancholy and childhood joy. Its themes extend beyond Christmas for me.

Rebel Ridge

Aaron Pierre convinces as Terry Richmond confronting a corrupt system. Jeremy Saulnier connects precise action with social questions. Pressure on the character creates tension beyond individual fights. That gives the thriller weight for me.

Lass los / Let Go

Josephine Bornebusch’s family drama connects an unusual road trip with wounds and the possibility of a new beginning. Some developments drift into cliché. For me, the honest closeness to its conflicts and moving moments nevertheless outweigh that weakness.

Joy

Thomasin McKenzie gives Jean Purdy’s involvement in developing IVF personal meaning. Ben Taylor connects the scientific history with hope and effort. The people behind a medical breakthrough move me. The film consequently becomes more than a presentation of its results.

The Greatest Night in Pop

The documentary about recording We Are the World benefits from closeness to the creative process. Historical footage and interviews show enthusiasm alongside difficulties. For me, it is a lively retrospective of shared musical commitment.

Drei Töchter / His Three Daughters

Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne make the sisters’ tensions powerful. Azazel Jacobs stays close to their relationships. Loss, old conflicts and the difficult possibility of reconciliation provide the drama’s strength for me.

Besondere Erwähnungen / Additional mentions

Carry-On appeals through its confined airport setting and the tension between Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman. That Christmas connects detailed animation with family humour. Hit Man joins sharp dialogue, romance and its protagonist’s double life. These three complement the ten selected titles.

Drawing Closer

For me, the selection’s emotional centre is Akito and Haruna’s relationship in the face of serious diagnoses. Ren Nagase and Natsuki Deguchi give it sensitivity. Takahiro Miki connects the weight with hope and beauty. The film reminds me of the value of shared time.
