Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead the fifth season of True Detective. HBO has confirmed Cage as Henry Logan and Banderas as Rai García, giving the crime anthology a new central pairing after Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in Night Country. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027.
Issa López remains in charge as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer. The investigation moves from Alaska to Jamaica Bay, New York. In an interview with TheWrap, López said the new story shares the same universe as the fourth season and retains the supernatural dimension of her approach.
True Detective has changed its leading actors and setting across its installments, while keeping the collision of police work and personal damage at its center. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson established that template in the Louisiana-set first season. Foster later won an Emmy for her performance in Night Country.
The announcement identifies the next detectives, location and creative team, but does not set a premiere date. With filming planned for next year, the next concrete milestone is the start of production.
