Tim Burton and Kazuo Ishiguro are developing an original film together. Ishiguro confirmed the collaboration to Deadline at the London Film Festival premiere of Klara and the Sun. He said he wrote the screenplay after the pair came up with an idea while he was visiting Burton.
The project is not an adaptation of one of Ishiguro's novels. According to Deadline, the plan is for Burton to direct, but the film remains in development. No distributor or additional cast is attached in the report.
Ishiguro is best known for novels including Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun. He also wrote the screenplay for Living, which starred Bill Nighy. That experience gives the new collaboration a writer already familiar with moving between literature and cinema.
The London announcement arrived as a different Ishiguro adaptation reached its premiere: Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega. Ortega also works with Burton on Wednesday, whose third season has completed production. The new Burton–Ishiguro project does not yet have a public title or production timetable.
