Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return to Paramount+ in March 2027. The second-season window was announced during New York Comic Con, alongside guest roles for Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt. An exact premiere day has not been announced. TVLine identifies the coming run as the show's second and final season, following the previously reported end of the series.
Nighy plays Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Holly Hunter's Nahla Ake. DeWitt plays Laytha Sadal, Tarima's mother and the First Lady of Betazed. These are family connections to established characters, giving the new casting a specific place in the academy's story instead of leaving the actors' roles unnamed. The announcement ties their arrivals to the returning ensemble.
The next season follows the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena. Paramount's synopsis describes a rivalry, diplomatic tournaments and a mysterious cadet, with friendships and relationships tested alongside questions of leadership. The central setting remains an education in what it means to serve in Starfleet, with the young cast carrying those personal and professional pressures together.
Hunter appeared at the NYCC presentation with Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané and Robert Picardo, joined by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Attendees received an in-room first look; that presentation should not be confused with the release of a public trailer. The event also celebrated Star Trek's sixtieth anniversary, connecting the academy series to the wider franchise occasion.
