Milo Manheim has landed a lead role in a new Serendipity film from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax. Deadline reported the casting on October 13. Michael Showalter is directing the project, which was announced in August, and Marc Klein, who wrote the 2001 film, is writing this version too. Manheim’s character has not yet been identified.
Showalter previously described the project as a contemporary answer to the original rather than a scene-for-scene remake. He said it would retain the title while introducing new characters, a new story and new ideas about love and relationships. Manheim’s character and a second lead have not been announced.
The 2001 Serendipity starred John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. Its premise rested on a chance meeting and the possibility that fate might bring two people together again. Klein returns to write the new film, with Showalter directing a different story under the familiar title.
Showalter and Jordana Mollick are producing for Semi-Formal Productions with Simon Fields, who produced the earlier film. Deadline also names Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra and Klein as executive producers for Miramax. Manheim is the first lead cast member named for the new film. A release date has not been announced.
