Cast and production plans
Ella Rumpf, Júlio Andrade and Ana Flávia Cavalcanti are set to star in Andrea Štaka’s Ibicaba: O Paraíso Prometido, Variety reports. Rumpf is known for Raw and Couture, Andrade for Under Pressure, and Cavalcanti for Baby.
Brazil’s MyMama Entertainment is set to produce the film with Switzerland’s Cinédokké Sagl and Brazil’s MMM Carioca, according to Variety. Filming is planned for next year in Switzerland and Cordeirópolis, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
The historical drama follows Barbara Simmen, a Swiss textile worker and single mother who emigrates from Glarus to Brazil in search of a future. At the Ibicaba estate, the promise of a better life meets a system of debt and exploitation. The project adapts a novel by Eveline Hasler. Swiss Films lists it under the title Ibicaba – Visions of Paradise and records its 2025 Eurimages Co-Production Development Award in Berlin. The cross-border story links Swiss emigration with Brazil’s colonial history, focusing on migration, motherhood and women’s resistance.
