Sam Heughan Joins Viola Davis in Paramount+ Thriller Ascent

John Logan’s corporate crisis drama adds Heughan as an agent working in the orbit of Davis’s elite fixer; production is planned for 2027.

Heughan enters the firm

Paramount Television Studios announced on October 22 that Sam Heughan will join Viola Davis in Ascent, a thriller series for Paramount+. He plays Conal, an agent at Ascent Ventures, where Davis’s Catriona Vail works as a corporate crisis fixer. The planned Los Angeles production begins in 2027. The premise brings Catriona’s professional skill into conflict with danger to her estranged daughter; Paramount has announced no release date.

The new casting matters because Conal belongs to the workplace that has taught Catriona to treat trouble as a client problem. A colleague can know her methods well enough to help her, copy them, or expose their limits. The daughter’s danger gives the series a clear personal stake, while the firm gives that stake a setting where information and loyalty have a price.

A project built around Davis

Paramount first greenlit Ascent in August with Davis attached as star and executive producer. John Logan was named creator, showrunner and executive producer; Davis and Julius Tennon are producing through JuVee Productions. That earlier announcement established Catriona as a fixer for powerful clients before Heughan’s part was announced.

The order of announcements is revealing. This series was framed around a character and her relationship before the second lead was named. Catriona’s work supplies reach and resources, but estrangement from her daughter supplies an absence that power cannot repair. The thriller has room to test whether a person praised for controlling public stories can tolerate a private relationship she cannot script.

A change of screen territory for Heughan

On STARZ, Heughan is listed alongside Caitríona Balfe and Sophie Skelton in the eighth season of Outlander, a ten-episode drama about a family defending its home amid new threats. Ascent gives him a very different announced role: Conal is a socially adaptable company agent who enjoys finishing an assignment.

The shift is useful for reading the casting without predicting the performance. Outlander has given Heughan years in a relationship led story where obligations travel through family and community. Conal’s job suggests compressed decisions made for employers and clients. Placing that kind of operator beside Catriona could make their shared competence a source of friction: two people may agree on a task yet disagree sharply about whom it serves.

Logan knows arguments about power

Logan wrote the Broadway play Red, as the Broadway League’s production database records. The Tony Awards list it as the 2010 winner for Best Play. The work follows a demanding artistic relationship; Ascent’s announced setting instead concerns a firm selling control over corporate emergencies.

That background is interesting because a thriller can locate power in talk as well as action. Who names a crisis, who withholds a detail, and who gets to decide when the job is complete are dramatic questions before any chase begins. A writer experienced with two people arguing over authority can bring texture to the meetings where Catriona and Conal bargain over a client. The award is evidence of Logan’s stage record, not a promise that this new series will repeat it.

The daughter must be more than a trigger

Catriona’s estranged daughter is the most important relationship in the announced premise. Estrangement means there is history the workplace cannot erase. A corporate fixer can choose what a client hears and when; a daughter can refuse that arrangement altogether. That imbalance gives the story a human scale even if the firm deals with wealthy international clients.

The series will gain depth if the daughter can make decisions rather than merely supply danger. Catriona may solve a practical threat while still failing to earn trust. Conal may be efficient at eliminating a problem but unable to judge what his methods cost someone outside the company. Those possibilities follow directly from the premise and sharpen the distinction between a professional success and a family repair.

What the cast announcement changes

Heughan’s arrival adds a named counterpart to Davis before cameras roll. It allows the central conflict to be understood as more than one capable woman against anonymous corporate machinery: Ascent Ventures now has another agent with his own appetite for completion. Davis’s position as producer gives her a formal role in the project as well as its on-screen center.

There is a practical reason to watch the later casting. Every client, colleague and family member can test a different rule by which Catriona lives. The richest version of the concept would make her skills genuinely useful while forcing her to see their limits when consent and affection matter more than winning a brief. Conal’s presence can intensify that test because he knows the language of the firm from the inside.
