Disney has greenlit an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+. Author Eoin Colfer announced the project at New York Comic Con during a panel marking the first novel’s 25th anniversary. He will executive-produce the adaptation. Disney has not set a premiere date.
The series follows Artemis, a 13-year-old prodigy who discovers a hidden world of armed, technologically advanced fairies. Disney says he plans to capture one and take its magic to heal his dying mother and save his family. Animation gives this adaptation a different form from Disney’s 2020 live-action film.
Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson executive-produce alongside Colfer. Juwono’s credits include Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series; Evanson worked on DuckTales and Monsters at Work. Disney has not announced a voice cast or episode count.
The first Artemis Fowl novel appeared in 2001. Disney says the books have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and been translated into 48 languages. The new series joins an animation slate that includes announced adaptations of Kingdom Hearts and Warrior Cats. Colfer’s involvement brings the books’ creator into the television version from the outset.
