The return to Hillman continues
Netflix has renewed its A Different World sequel series for Season 2. Felicia Pride is the showrunner and an executive producer. The renewal is confirmed, but Netflix has not announced a release date.
The sequel centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins her first year at Hillman College. She is the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played by returning cast members Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy. Deborah’s family ties connect this new generation of students to the original series.
The first season follows that new Hillman generation across 10 episodes. Among Deborah’s fellow students are Rashida, Hazel, Amir and Kojo, whose academic and personal lives are part of the story. The series also brings back characters from the original show, which ran from 1987 to 1993. Debbie Allen, who worked on that earlier series, is an executive producer of the sequel and directed its premiere episode.
What Season 2 is set to follow
Netflix’s Season 2 preview moves Deborah and her classmates into their sophomore year after the summer. It points to past decisions, uncertain futures and new loves and friendships as the students return to campus. For now, that is the outline of their next year at Hillman, rather than a detailed episode-by-episode account.
